Wagner Park Hosts the Return of Two Popular Summer Events: Westwinds and Movie in the Park

The Westwinds Brass Band celebrated its 50th Anniversary and performed the first concert of 2011 at Wagner Park on Sunday evening, June 5th.  More than two hundred guests attended the free concert.  A vibrant, active Wagner Park is a complement to our passive green space at Tech Terrace Park.  More concerts will be held at 8pm on upcoming Sunday evenings---bring your lawn chair and join the fun!  And remember, Movie In the Park is this Saturday night at dark in Wagner.  The feature film is Night At the Museum.  Bug spray, refreshments, and a blanket are handy items for an enjoyable time at this favorite summer event.

Westwinds Brass Band Returns To Wagner Park On Sunday

The Westwinds Brass Band performs at 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 at Wagner Park, 28th Street and Flint Avenue under the direction of conductor Phil Anthony will conduct.

The Westwinds band is an offshoot of the Lubbock Municipal Band, formed by Dean Killion in 1961. Thus, this concert marks the band’s 50th anniversary and the begining of its Golden Anniversary Season.

Mayor Tom Martin will be the guest conductor on June 5, and Chris Kabes will be trumpet soloist.



Reminders

Tonight, weather permitting, the South Plais Astronomy Club will host their monthly Third Friday Stargazing in Tech Terrace Park.

Also, Movies in the Park is this Saturday and the last performance of the Westwinds Brass Bands is scheduled for Sunday night.  Wagner Park hosts both of these fine events.

Westwinds Brass Band Performances Begin Sunday June 6th.

The Westwinds Brass Band is a community brass band consisting of 35-40 members from all walks of life. The band performs programs for various community events, such as 4th on Broadway, civic club programs as well as series of concerts in Wagner Park.

Posted: May 30, 2010 - Fans of brass bands and musical evenings will be delighted to learn of the Westwinds Brass Band's concerts in the park happening on Sundays this summer at Wagner Park.



"It's just an hour of old-fashioned band music and a time for people to get together outside and listen to music," said the band's director, Phil Anthony.


The free concerts are intended to enhance the sense of community and to bring friends and family together for an evening. Anthony said concert attendees typically take lawn chairs, blankets or picnic suppers in order to make the event more comfortable and special.


The band will perform at Wagner Park's picnic pavilion, at Elgin Avenue and 26th Street, for seven consecutive Sundays thanks to sponsorship by the Tech Terrace Neighborhood Association.


Anthony said the band will play traditional band music including marches and patriotic songs to entertain visitors to the park during the hourlong performances.


In addition, the event will have a featured soloist each week, and will play children's marches to encourage children to take part in marching and dancing to the music.
