LUNA Fundraiser This Saturday

The Lubbock United Neighborhood Association will host  the Spirit of Community Fish Fry and Picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Park, South Loop 289 between Indiana and Memphis avenues. Tickets are $10, and children age 4 and younger will be admitted free. There will be local entertainment from a mariachi group from Cavazos Middle School and Lubbock High School, and a bluegrass ensemble from South Plains College.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets.

River Smith’s will cater the fish, chicken and fixings, and Sheridan’s will provide custard cones.
There will be a jump house and slide for kids.  All proceeds will go to LUNA, a nonprofit organization that provides support to neighborhood associations throughout the city.

Mission: LUNA is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to Lubbock's neighborhoods. LUNA is an independent voice championing our neighborhoods, a resource neighborhoods turn to, and a source for local government on neighborhood issues.


Some of the things LUNA does:
  • Organize, support and promote neighborhood associations.
  • Publish a quarterly newsletter informing Lubbock citizens on neighborhood associations.
  • Distribute monthly crime statistics to neighborhood associations.
  • Produce newsletters and flyers for neighborhood associations
  • Provide a resource library of books and videos.
  • The Annual National Night Out Campaign - neighborhoods and law enforcement officers join together to fight crime.
  • Provide board training for neighborhood association board members
  • Quarterly General Membership Meetings - an opportunity to network with other neighborhoods, compare notes and share solutions to common problems.
  • Calendar of Events - lists meetings and important events for each neighborhood association
  • Set up neighborhood watch and crime prevention programs
  • Plan Concerts and Dramas in the Park
  • Host National Night Out events
  • Cultivate community gardens
  • Partner with corporate sponsors for neighborhood improvements
  • Sponsor seasonal neighborhood festivals
  • Participate in neighborhood health and safety fairs
  • Organize fix-up, paint-up projects
  • Plan marches against gangs, crime & drugs
  • Install security lighting in alleys
  • Help remove graffiti
  • Organize alley, park and neighborhood clean-up projects
  • Host holiday home tours
  • Sponsor get acquainted block parties
  • Organize a Citizens on Patrol Service
  • Promote yard of the month awards
  • Help plan murals
