Dueling Yardsigns and Other Political Musings
Another election season is upon us. Our neighborhood has the reputation for being politically active, although conventional wisdom says that whichever candidate has the most signs in Tech Terrace will probably lose. Here are some examples of neighbors expressing their political choices.
Not sure if this is an example of a house divided or a dislike of Gov. Perry.
This person is obviously against the proposed LISD Bond but their neighbor directly across the street supports it. Note, neither John Frullo nor Joe Heflin will be on the ballots available in our neighborhood

A Busy Day in Tech Terrace
Saturday was a busy day in the Tech Terrace Neighborhood. Brandy Davis submitted the following report:
This is a brief report on the Tour de Tech Terrace. It seems that the Delta Chi "Capture the Flag" event in Tech Terrace park caused parking frustrations for resident neighbors.
This is a brief report on the Tour de Tech Terrace. It seems that the Delta Chi "Capture the Flag" event in Tech Terrace park caused parking frustrations for resident neighbors.
Austin Keith, Tour organizer, reported approximately 630-700 riders in the Tour. Captain Hudgens, LPD, estimated about 900-1000 event riders. Both concurred there were fewer house stops (7 stops on the tour route,) 1 arrest (public intoxication), 4 citations (public urination) and 1 ticket for an unleashed dog (pitbull puppy). The route map was provided to the police--the last stop changed at the last minute yesterday. One homeowner specifically requested police presence to deter congregating overflow in their yard (2710 21st) and was satisfied with the deterrent. Police officers helped curb traffic so riders could safely pass at major intersections. The majority of riders had dispersed as of 7:20pm.

Meeting Concerning The Future of Wagner Park

The Aesthetics Committee for the Neighborhood Association will be on the Agenda of the Parks Board meeting to update the Parks Board before it makes a decision on the Pavilion at Wagner Park.
Parks and Recreation is planning to spend $65,000 on a pavilion at Wagner Park. The current plan is to demolish the historic pavilion and construct (such as seen in South Lubbock parks) a concrete pad with a metal peaked roof and no walls, no bathrooms, no storage and no acoustic features. The Neighborhood Association has overwhelmingly voted to plead with the City to spend that money instead on enhancing the current asset of the pavilion with bathrooms.
The Parks Board is quite resistant to the request of the Neighborhood Association, as it would mean Wagner Park users would continue to benefit from the highly valuable asset of the bathrooms, when the City does not have the funds to confer this benefit on other parks. In other words, every park wants bathrooms, but the City can't afford to build them in every park, so their solution is to demolish bathrooms in the few parks that are lucky enough to have them.
Please attend and show your support for Wagner Park and its current pavilion. Make no mistade, the City will demolish this asset unless we show them that users of Wagner Park are not apathetic and will demand to be heard. Folks from all over Lubbock love and use Wagner Park. Don't let the city take away your assets because of political lethargy!

Codes Anyone?
The following pictures were taken in the alley in the 2800 Block between 25th and 24th Street. This was reported to Codes Enforcement through their website in June but nothing has moved.
If you embiggen this picture you can see there is a CAR in the back yard.

Zoning:
Includes neighborhood issues such as parking unpaved, junk stored outside and RV storage, as well as commercial property uses such as sign allotment, property use requirements, and landscaping. Violations are usually given between 1 and 10 days to be abated
Junk Vehicles:
Applies to vehicles that are on private property that have expired tags or inspection and have not moved in 30 days. Process begins with notice of violation, and then a public hearing is held for a order of abatement to be issued so the vehicle may be towed.
Not sure why this didn't go anywhere.

Schools that serve the UNIT Neighborhood recently earned honors.
10 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists named in Lubbock ISD
National Merit Scholarship Corporation officials announced the 2011 Semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program on Sept. 15, 2010. Of the 1.5 million students taking the qualifying exam, Lubbock ISD was home to ten students who earned the prestigious award. LISD is the only district in Lubbock County with more than one semifinalist.
Eight of Lubbock ISD's semifinalists are from Lubbock High School: Ethan E. Earl, Paul Glasheen, Julia Ho, Mary F. O’Briant, Sadaf A. Siddiqui, Sarah N. Steinmeier, Wesley W. Wehde and Laura Xu.
JT Hutchinson Middle School, a fine arts magnet, boasts record enrollment this year. According to Principal Heide Dye, "I couldn't be more proud of the students and faculty for the smooth start to the school year! It is truly a blessing to work with such dedicated professionals each and every day."

New RV Park In Tech Terrace
The following was submitted to UNIT News by Ami Hill-Rendon.
See the attached photos from Saturday morning -- it seems every home game there are visitors to our fine neighborhood who think we're the neighborhood RV Park. They bring in their ENORMOUS RVS and a few more cars come to join the party on Friday night and stay over for a fun-filled night in the RV. They stay all day Saturday and of course Saturday night, then take off to their next destination on Sunday... unless of course, it's Labor Day weekend, and then they get to park free at Tech Terrace Park for THREE nights!
I hope no home on the block needs services from the fire department, because it'd be a real trick to get the fire truck to the hydrant ....

Tech Terrace: students vs. long-time residents

Kristina Samuel lived with two friends in Tech Terrace, a neighborhood located across the street from Texas Tech University, during her sophomore year.
Eight months into the living situation, Samuel and her roommates received a notification from the city informing them they were breaking a code ordinance by living with two or more unrelated people.
They had to move out of their house at the end semester.
“The law isn’t fair for students,” Samuel said. “I don’t feel comfortable living with only one other person, but that’s what the law makes you do.”
Samuel is not the only student feeling this way.
Dee Jay Wilde, Texas Tech’s student government external vice president, said that ordinance, along with others, is not student-friendly.
“It’s obviously not a very student-friendly code, as well as a lot of parking restrictions in Tech Terrace aren’t really student-friendly, but all we can do is all we can do,” Wilde said. “SGA doesn’t, Tech doesn’t even, have a lot of jurisdiction within the neighborhood.”
Wilde said SGA tries to cooperate with the Texas Tech Homeowner association’s concerns and requests, but incidents happen.
John Winker, owner of Tech Terrace Real Estate, said an alleged assault by a student on a non-student resident at a party in Tech Terrace in February is causing these changes in the neighborhood.
“I think it made our neighborhood have somewhat of a tarnished image,” Winker said. “People got involved and made it sound like if you’re walking the mean streets of Tech Terrace that you may be cussed at, vomited on, urinated on and hit with a beer bottle, and it’s just not accurate at all.”
Seideman said four years ago that was not accurate, but it is with students today.
“Now, if you walk through a bunch of drunk tech students you might as well be waving through a biker brawl,” Seideman said. “They will spit at you, cuss at you, throw beer bottles at you and call you all sorts of names.”
Winker said the event has not affected the amount of people buying or renting houses in the area. He said students moving into the neighborhood should get to know their neighbors.
“Get to know these people, and it’s less likely things will happen,” Winker said. “Just being friendly, it goes a long way.”
Seideman said she does not feel Texas Tech students respect other residents.
“I feel like we’re being squeezed out of our own neighborhood by imminent domain. We’re being taken over,” Seideman said. “Texas Tech refuses to accept any role in student guidance, in teaching – I could give you stories about the lack of interest in helping us maintain a stable neighborhood.”
Although she wasn’t involved in the alleged assault case, Samuel said she feels personally targeted by the long-time Tech Terrace residents.
It’s Tech Terrace, and it’s right across from campus,” Samuel said. “If they don’t want to be around students, there are plenty of neighborhoods farther away that not as many students live in.”

An Inclusive Commemorative in Tech Terrace Park
The following was submitted to UNIT News by Robin Parks.
The commemorative planter or sign is a fantastic idea! It would be great if we could add Mary and Darrell Vine's names to this tribute. As the founding people of the UNIT neighborhood in the early 70's they have worked endlessly and oh-so-quietly behind the scenes, never seeking any recognition. They have contributed so much to UNIT for all our benefits for all these years. As 26 year neighborhood residents we would be delighted to see their names added to this commemoration. Robin and Don Parks

Marjorie Manning
To all Members of the Tech Terrace/Unit Neighborhood Association:
During the last few years, various groups within the neighborhood association have been discussing the contributions that Marjorie Manning has made to this area. She has been the foundation and mainstay of this neighborhood for over twenty-five years and for the most part we owe her what we have become. One of the oldest and strongest neighborhood associations in Lubbock.
In keeping with this thought some of us think that it would be appropriate to construct some type of brick planter or sign next to the garden area in the northeast part of Tech Terrace Park to thank her and commemorate her service to the association. The idea is to either sell bricks that are engraved with family names of donors or just get donations and place their names on a plaque which should raise enough funds to complete the project. The current estimate is $100 per brick or donation and the size of the planter or sign would depend on the number of bricks sold or money raised. In addition we are looking into the possibility of acquiring one of the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts’ hearts to place in the center of the planter which would depict that Marjorie Manning would always be in out heats.
I met with Randy Truesdell of the City Parks & Rec. Department and they are interested in the project, but did day that I will have to go before their Board in September for approval. They are putting together some design ideas for us to consider at out meeting. Therefore, there will be an open house/fundraiser at the Laurin Prather residence, 3108-20th Street, on September 9th, from 5:30-7:00 P.M. to solicit funds for the project and gather any additional ideas that might enhance the proposal. Snacks, punch and adult beverages will be provided.
We hope that each of you shares our enthusiasm for this project to honor Marjorie. Please join us so that we may pay tribute to one of the most dedicated people we know in the neighborhood.
