Tour de Tech Terrace

An Invitation from Safety Committee Co-Chair, Kevin Austin Keith

In the beginning, the first Tour de Tech Terrace consisted of just 32 cyclist friends with a single goal to have fun and enjoy an afternoon ride through the neighborhood. As time progressed and Tour de Tech Terrace (TDTT) grew, so did the goals and ambitions of the riders and organizers alike. From less than a hundred to more than a thousand riders, the tour gained the strength to give back to the community. Starting in 2006, TDTT began donating canned food to the South Plains Food Bank, Hurricane Relief Efforts, and Salvation Army. This proved to be most beneficial when in Fall 2009 the South Plains Food Bank ran out of canned goods. Without the Tour riders generous donations, the food boxes would have been short of needed canned food and many people would have gone without. Now the tour has obviously outgrown its infancy and must evolve into a neighborhood-sponsored family and student event. The vision is simple: a day where the unique and diverse Tech Terrace neighborhood can come together and show not only how great a neighborhood we are but also what we have to offer to Lubbock, Texas.

So this Saturday May 1st, 2010 come out and show your support for our neighborhood and for the many bike riders in our community. Bring canned goods to any house the tour stops at and wave to the riders that pass. Cheer and smile! We would also like to encourage people to give more than just support.  Help spread the word about how great Tech Terrace and The Tour are! Hope to see you out in the neighborhood.
Sincerely, Tour de Tech Terrace Organizers

Tech Terrace tour to take neighborly approach

By Adam D. Young
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Friday, April 16, 2010

The Tech Terrace UNIT Neighborhood Association will host a home tour this month aimed at improving its image as a college-student- and family-friendly neighborhood.

Organizers for the one-square-mile neighborhood just south of Texas Tech hope to show off what they call a family atmosphere

Its magnet schools and central location in the city help attract families and prospective Lubbockites to the neighborhood, said Laura Anderson with the neighborhood association.

The association is hosting a Spring Home Tour from 1 to 4 p.m. April 24 to give people free tours of the more than 30 homes for sale in the neighborhood.

"We know not everyone coming will be actually looking to buy a home, and that's fine," Anderson said. "What we really want people to do is come to our neighborhood - see it and tell their friends about it."

The tour starts at Roscoe Wilson Elementary, 2807 25th St., where people can pick up a sheet listing houses on the tour.

To find the neighborhood, Anderson said, she recommends people remember the UNIT in the association's name is an acronym for the streets that surround it - University Avenue, 19th Street, Indiana Avenue and 34th Street.

Neighborhood Association member Mary Vines said the Spring Showcase is a chance for the neighborhood to dispel what she described as a recent perception Tech Terrace is not family friendly.

She said negative media exposure - such as reports on a Tech student who was stunned with a police Taser during the Tour de Tech Terrace bike ride and a neighborhood resident who claims she was assaulted by a Tech student at a party - doesn't give an accurate picture of the neighborhood.

Anderson said Tech Terrace is a tight-knit neighborhood where young families interact positively with college students.

"This neighborhood wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't right by Tech and didn't have college students in it," she said.

Along with its college students and families, Anderson said, Tech Terrace houses a diverse community of different ethnicities and professions ranging from Tech faculty members to medical professionals to lawyers.

"It really enables people to draw on a lot of other cultural references," she said.

Vines said the neighborhood association also is betting Tech Terrace's schools can entice families to move to the neighborhood. Both Roscoe Wilson Elementary and J.T. Hutchinson Middle School are humanities and fine arts magnet schools within the Lubbock Independent School District.

Children who live in the neighborhood are automatically accepted into the schools while other students typically are placed on a magnet school waiting list, said district spokeswoman Nancy Sharp.

Anderson said the neighborhood association also encourages Tech Terrace residents to be involved in the community through parties and such annual events as the 4th of July Lawn Mower Brigade - a group of dozens of the neighborhood's residents who march in the 4th on Broadway Parade with their push- or riding-lawn mowers.

"What we've really been trying to do is get people out meeting their neighbors, working on projects together," Anderson said.

Lowe's Grand Re-Opening

Lowe's Corner Market held their Grand Re-Opening of their newly refurbished store in Tech Terrace.  Roger Lowe, Jr. cuts the ceremonial blue ribbon to christen the much improved grocery.  Along with a brand new facade and landscaping, the interior of the store is all new with a deli and an organic food section.
It even has a bike rack to you can pedal to the store.
Lowe's made a significant investment in the neighborhood.  I encourage neighbors to check it out.

Aesthetics Committee Meeting

At J&B Coffee 4/11 left to right:

Holle Humphries, Jaime Nainez, Marion Phillips, Helen Liggett, Talia Jackson, Sherman Phillips, Tai Kreidler, Clint McDonald. Others participating that evening, but not in photo: Celeste Yoshinobu, Brandy Davis, Shery Goodwin, Patrick DeCesaro, Elaine Wilson, Calum Hetherington,Caroline Nunn, Denise Pope and Deanna Pearson.

The following was submitted by Helen Liggett, Chair of Aethestics

The Aesthetics Committee looked at Wagner Park related issues at a meeting held Sunday, April 11 at 7 pm at J&B Coffee. We addressed:

1) The Wagner Park Pavillion renovation or destruction. We wish to learn from the general membership of the Neighborhood Association if we want:

a. - renovation of the current pavilion, with bathrooms, or

b. - renovation of the current pavilion, without bathrooms, or

c. - tear out and replacement with the type of pavilion found at Ribble Park, or

d. - tear out and replacement with something more expensive than the type of pavilion found at Ribble Park.

We have requested from Parks and Recreation a move-back of the slated destruction of the pavilion by one year to give the neighborhood the opportunity to research and decide from the available options. Options a. and d. would require addtional funding other than what Parks and Recreation has available.

2) We also are seeking input from the entire membership of the Neighborhood Association on what should be done with the bathrooms at the current pavilion while awaiting destruction or renovation. Do we want the bathrooms opened as soon as possible? Or for them to remain locked? If opened, when? immediately or at some time in the future? When open, should there be limited hours they are available, such as 8:00 am to 8:00 pm?

In addition to neighborhood input, I am polling the staff at Roscoe Wilson Elementary as to their preferences.

3) Driving on the park is continuing to be a problem, as is parking enforcment. We are gathering information for the membership to consider in determining whether or not to pay for off-duty police officers to patrol the parks.

Volunteers Needed For Spring Home Tour

Received From Tech Terrace Neighbor Laura James

Spring Home Tour Fast Approaching

Tech Terrace Neighborhood Association is holding a Spring
Open House on Saturday, April 24th from 1-4.

This tour will feature over 50 homes that are for sale in the neighborhood. The purpose of the event is to encourage families to come and take a look at the many wonderful homes that are currently available, get information about the schools in the neighborhood, and get a feel ofwhat a great place Tech Terrace is to live. The event is free.

I am asking you to volunteer your time during the event. We are hoping to have as many neighbors on hand as possible, positioned at various locations to answer questions and be a presence in the homes. The tour will start on the lawn at Roscoe Wilson Elementary and we are asking volunteers to show up just a few minutes early and get their assignment. If you can help, please email Laura James at laurajames@suddenlink.net or Marjorie Manning at mmmanning@sbcglobal.net

Please tell your friends that have been looking for a home in the neighborhood about this event. Let them know that the easiest way to ensure a spot at either Roscoe Wilson Elementary or Hutch Middle School (the best schools in Lubbock), is to live in the attendance zone!!!

Tech Terrace UNIT Neighborhood Spring Home Tour

The following was sent to TT/UNIT News by neighbor Mary Vines:

With the spring home tour just 17 days away, we would like to get information out to the neighbors so that they can begin to share it with their friends and acquaintances outside the area.. Word of mouth will go a long way toward publicizing the event and bringing folks in to enjoy the tour. We plan soon to have a flyer that can be downloaded and printed by folks who would like to put some printed information in the hands of prospective buyers. But we would like to have folks start talking up April 24 even before the flyer.

Neighbors who may or may not know prospective residents can help in another way. We need hosts for the houses, so if neighbors could volunteer by sending a return e-mail, that would be wonderful.

A third way neighbors can help is to contact owners selling their homes without a realtor and tell them to contact Laura Anderson (phone number is in media advisory) if they want to be listed on the home tour. People who may be planning to list their homes may want to finalize the listing right away so they, too, can be included.

I’m attaching the media advisory that we’re sending to radio and television stations and newspaper to let people know how they can contribute to the success of this event.

KCBD update on legal action concerning 22nd Street

http://www.kcbd.com/global/story.asp?s=12257881

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The owners of an alleged party house in the Tech Terrace neighborhood have requested a jury trial.

The trouble began in February when police say Bailee Barrett, 19, attacked a woman outside her home in the 3200 block of 22nd Street. The victim, Sherry Grusendorf, filed suit against Holden Jacoby and his parents, who own the home across the street.

The Jacobys' attorneys have said the family is not to blame for Barrett's actions. And in a response to the court, the Jacobys denied all of Grusendorf's allegations. They also say her complaint is too vague, and therefore makes them unable to prepare a proper defense.

The Jacobys response also indicates that Grusendorf's own actions may have contributed to the incident that night, including taking flash pictures of strangers in their cars - not on Grusendorf's property. They say her lawsuit is groundless, filed for the sole purpose of harassment. The Jacobys want the suit dismissed, and they want Grusendorf to cover their legal expenses.

Water Restrictions Go Into Effect Today

Lubbock ordinances that prohibit watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in hopes of blocking the wasteful spray of city drinking water start today.  The rules prevent watering during the stretch of day least likely to do grass and plants any good. The city limits also customers to spraying no more than 1.5 inches of water on their lawn a week.  Heat and wind during the day mean the hundreds of gallons of water residents pay to spray on their lawn have a better chance of becoming clouds than nourishing yards.

Lubbock allows some exceptions. Residents need not starve newly planted grass, and can use soaker hoses or water by hand during the day.

Lubbock also prohibits runoff — long creeks that spill out of yards and down city streets.

Ignoring the rules can carry their own price. Violations of the water policy customers refuse to correct come with an up to $200 fine.

Summer watering restrictions continue through Sept 30th.
